BlackBird Takes Off: Austrian Flying Taxi Completes First Successful Flight

A new era of urban mobility has begun in Linz. Austrian startup CycloTech has successfully completed the first flight of its flying taxi BlackBird — an eVTOL craft featuring a unique 360-degree thrust vectoring system. This isn’t just a tech demonstration; it’s a statement aiming to radically transform transport infrastructure.

Instead of traditional propellers, BlackBird uses six CycloRotors — a patented thrust system that allows maneuvering in any direction, literally “hovering” in place, and landing precisely even in confined urban spaces. This level of control makes BlackBird particularly attractive for megacities with dense development and variable weather conditions.

The craft weighs just 340 kilograms and was developed in record time — under one year. The CycloTech team built everything from scratch: from aerodynamic design to the control software. The successful first flight marks the beginning of a series of tests aimed at proving the system’s safety and reliability.

For the eVTOL industry, this is a landmark moment. If CycloTech continues to advance at this pace, flying taxis could soon move from futurism into everyday reality — and Austria may well become one of the first countries where urban traffic takes to the skies.
