Gemini Accelerates Urban Planning in the United Kingdom

The British government is implementing Google’s artificial intelligence system Gemini to accelerate the urban planning process. The new platform, named Extract and developed by the i.AI team, uses Gemini’s multimodal capabilities to convert outdated paper documents — including blurry maps and handwritten notes — into structured digital data in just 40 seconds. This significantly reduces the workload on municipal authorities and speeds up decision-making on construction applications.

Extract is already undergoing trials in four municipalities, including Westminster and Exeter, with plans to expand nationwide by spring 2026. The system can automatically extract geographical boundaries, recognize addresses and landmarks, and match historical maps with modern geospatial data. This marks the first large-scale implementation of AI in public administration in the United Kingdom, demonstrating the potential of technology to transform public services.
