Helsing: AI Guarding Democracies — How a Startup Is Transforming the Defense Industry

The Munich-based startup Helsing, founded in 2021, is rapidly transforming the security and defense landscape by using artificial intelligence (AI) to protect democratic values. According to its official website, the company’s bold mission is to become the global leader in real-time information processing — turning sensor data into strategic advantage for democratic governments. But what makes Helsing so unique in the world of AI and defense?

Helsing is developing an AI platform that fuses data from multiple sources — including infrared, video, sonar, and radio frequency sensors — to create a real-time, detailed picture of the battlefield. It’s essentially an “operating system for war,” enabling military forces to make faster and more accurate decisions, whether on the front lines or in command centers. In 2024, the company unveiled its first strike drone, the HX-2, capable of hitting targets up to 100 km away. The HX-2 is integrated with Helsing’s Altra platform, which enables control over drone swarms, artillery, and reconnaissance systems — while maintaining a “human in the loop” for all critical decisions, a key ethical principle the company upholds.

Helsing has already made significant strides: in 2023, it secured a contract from the German government to equip Eurofighter jets with AI-driven electronic warfare capabilities, and later won a tender to build the AI infrastructure for the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program. In February 2025, Helsing announced a strategic partnership with Mistral AI to integrate large language models (LLMs) into its defense systems — a move that, according to co-founder Gundbert Scherf, “will strengthen Europe’s position in the global AI race.” The company is also working with Loft Orbital to launch the first European AI-powered satellite constellation dedicated to defense and security.

Helsing has been actively supporting Ukraine since 2022 by supplying frontline technologies and has raised €829 million in funding to date, including €450 million in a Series C round in 2024. The company is now valued at €5 billion, making it the first European unicorn in defense-related AI. Helsing proves that AI can be not only a weapon, but also a shield for democracies.
