OpenAI Doubles Revenue: $10 Billion Annual Run Rate and a $125 Billion Goal by 2029
OpenAI has reached a new financial milestone: the company’s annual recurring revenue (ARR) has reached $10 billion, nearly double the figure at the end of 2024 ($5.5 billion). This growth is driven by the rapid expansion of the ChatGPT user base, which as of March 2025 numbers 500 million weekly active users and 3 million paying enterprise clients.
The primary revenue sources are ChatGPT subscriptions, enterprise products, and API usage, while revenue from Microsoft licensing and large one-off deals is not included in this figure. Despite the impressive growth, OpenAI continues to operate at a loss — approximately $5 billion in 2024 — and does not expect to reach profitability before 2029.
In March 2025, the company raised $40 billion in a new funding round led by SoftBank, bringing its valuation to $300 billion. These funds are directed towards scaling infrastructure, including Project Stargate — a joint venture with Oracle and SoftBank to build a network of data centers supporting future AI development.
OpenAI is also actively expanding its presence in hardware by acquiring the startup io, founded by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion. The goal is to develop new AI devices that go beyond traditional screens and interfaces.
Thus, OpenAI is not only solidifying its position in generative AI, but also paving the way for the creation of a new technological ecosystem that unites software and hardware.
