Quantum-Systems: Germany’s Next Drone Unicorn
Munich-based startup Quantum-Systems is rapidly approaching unicorn status, with its valuation soon expected to exceed one billion euros. Founded in 2015, the company develops vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for both civilian and military applications.
Quantum’s drones combine vertical takeoff capabilities with the flight range of traditional aircraft. This makes them especially useful in reconnaissance, mapping, agriculture, and defense. The company already supplies drones to the armed forces of Germany and Ukraine, and recently secured a major order from the U.S. Department of Defense.
In 2023, Quantum-Systems raised over €63 million from investors such as Project A, Sanno Capital, Peter Thiel, and TESI (Italy’s sovereign fund). The startup is now preparing for another funding round that could officially launch it into the unicorn club.
Beyond military and civilian markets, Quantum-Systems is also developing dual-use technologies — applications that serve both defense and commercial needs — making it highly attractive to investors amid rising global demand for unmanned systems.
Quantum-Systems is a prime example of how defense innovations are becoming a driving force for Germany’s entire tech sector.
