Split Between Black Forest Labs and xAI: End of Collaboration with Elon Musk

German startup Black Forest Labs, specializing in AI-driven image generation, has ended its collaboration with Elon Musk’s company xAI. Previously, Black Forest Labs had provided its FLUX-1 model for xAI’s chatbot Grok.

The partnership began in August 2024, when xAI integrated FLUX-1 into Grok, sparking controversy due to the lack of content restrictions. Users were able to generate images, including controversial and potentially offensive material, leading to criticism of both companies.

According to sources close to Black Forest Labs, xAI decided to terminate the collaboration and focus on developing its own image generation models. The exact date and reasons for the split have not been disclosed.

Despite ending the partnership with xAI, Black Forest Labs continues to work with other companies, including French firm Mistral AI and Deutsche Telekom. The startup also plans to further develop its technology and expand its market presence.
