The Exploration Company: Europe’s Answer to SpaceX Prepares for a New Investment Orbit
The German-French startup The Exploration Company (TEC) is preparing a new investment round expected, according to sources, to exceed the 150 million euros raised at the end of 2024. Founded in 2021 by former Airbus executive Hélène Huby, the company aims to become Europe’s competitor to SpaceX by developing next-generation reusable orbital vehicles.
TEC’s main project is Nyx, a reusable spacecraft designed to deliver cargo and scientific modules to low Earth orbit and, in the future, to the Moon. Unlike American commercial operators, The Exploration Company focuses on open architecture and standardized interfaces that enable European space agencies and private companies to integrate their own technologies into the ship’s system.
The company has already attracted the attention of major institutional investors and EU government bodies, including ESA and CNES. Successful tests of Nyx’s key systems are scheduled for 2026, with the first demonstration flight planned for 2027.
The strategic goal of the project is to restore Europe’s autonomous access to space at a time when American and Chinese players dominate commercial launches. TEC is building a model in which reusability and modularity dramatically reduce the cost of orbital flights, opening the door to a new wave of private missions and interplanetary startups.
The upcoming investment round is expected to support production scale-up and the launch of serial assembly of Nyx at facilities in Germany and France. If the company’s plans materialize, The Exploration Company will become the first private operator in the European market capable of competing with SpaceX not only technologically, but economically.
